She threw her arms around his neck
Only to discover he wasn’t there
Like broken glass
War had left him shattered.

Gathering an icy breath
And feeling as it chilled her lungs,
She held it there until it poured into the vacancy of her heart.
Oh, how she had longed for his return.

Sunny days had once allowed sand to run beneath their feet,
Now, like a raging river his soul ran lost into an ocean.
Searching painfully in his eyes,
She turned up nothing.

But she remembered how it felt to rest her head upon his shoulder,
Feeling safe and secure,
And knowing of his love.
